22nd August, 2019 – The Integrative Seminar class began with a discussion on the first chapter of Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Ms. Sharma discussed with us the theme and the main characters of the story and how Kafka has expressed details of his own life into the main character of the story, who finds himself transformed into a vermin when he wakes up from his sleep one day. The class had a very fruitful discussion on the book and how reflection played as essential part of the book. Ma’am then asked us to list down a few attributes about ourselves that we feel reflect our personality. We then has a discussion over the different attributes that we associate ourselves with. We were further asked to write metaphors for ourselves using those attributes as a key. I described myself as the Mumbai rains and even having permanent Red Bull wings.
The Integrative Studio class began with a recap of the Seminar class that took place before the Studio session and we had another brief discussion on Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Ms. Patil told us about how Franz Kafka came to be known after his death, how most of his work was burned by himself and how they have abrupt endings. Ma’am reviewed our 3D representations of our abstracts that we had made in the previous class. The class then discussed the metaphors noted in the seminar class and we were then asked to illustrate them on paper using the same, line and dot as the medium of expression. Ma’am then showed us a small clip called The Line and The Dot: A Romance in Lower Mathematics to help us better understand the relation between lines and dots.
