Space and Materiality – Hand Abstractions

30th August, 2019 – The class began with a discussion on the hand grips that we were asked to make in the previous class. Ms Sutaria then reviewed each student’s hand grips and picked out the best of the hands grips for the next step of our assignment, which was to make different abstracts of that hand grip. Before we came up with the main hand abstracts, ma’am asked us to pick any organic or inorganic object and make abstract formations of those particular objects, for a practise on abstracts.

The students then came up with innovative concepts of the main hand grip, mine being an intertwined wire formation, a mosaic tiles form and an ice cream dripping form. The class was then asked to make prototypes of the three different concepts, from different angles of the hand grips, being top, bottom and both the sides. This was by far the most interesting Space and Materiality class as I enjoyed making the various prototypes and hand grips. This was done for our forthcoming assignment, for which we had to make a three dimensional interpretation of the hand grip we had made, using one or two of the materials we had sourced for our material boards.
