Objects as History – Chalcolithic Period

13th January, 2020 – Ms. Malvika Mahidhar – We began our class with a discussion on the Chalcolithic period in history, which accounts the Indus Valley Civilisation. The class shared whatever information they knew about the civilisation – including Harappa, Mohenjodaro which are the main settlements of the Indus Valley civilisation.

We discussed how the cities in the civilisation were planned and how they had established their economy via barter system. Indus Valley civilisation saw many pectoral scripts and arts in the form of seals made of terracotta or copper, and pottery, that has been found abundantly in this civilisation. The most famous figurine being the Dancing Girl, talks about the civilisation. The people in the civilisation worshipped nature as their Mother Goddess.

We then talked about the requirements of a settlement – such as a fertile land and availability of water, which attracts other people and animals – which makes it easier to hunt.
